Gary leads the technology efforts for University Collections, including the design and implementation of a new online collections interface that will ensure that students, scholars, and the public will have access to collections materials across Indiana University’s collections. Gary also works with collections across the IU system in determining collections management software needs, and he leads efforts to find workable solutions that will better allow collections to document and organize their materials via a new unified collections management system. He also oversees continued upkeep of University Collections’ website, their newly developed Collections Profile System (CPS), and manages technological needs at the new Collections Teaching, Research and Exhibition Center (CTREC) at the McCalla School.
Previously, Gary was the Chief Information Officer and Assistant Director for Information Services at the Indiana Geological and Water Survey (IGWS). In this position, he modernized the department’s IT structure, improved their data management processes, and led the creation of web applications, databases, and mobile apps. He also has significant experience working hands-on with collections both at IGWS and as the former Paleontology Collections Manager in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, as well as a strong track record of grants awarded in support of cyberinfrastructure for collections management.
